Individual Therapy refers to an interaction or treatment that occurs between a trained professional and a client or patient. The problems addressed during these interactions are psychological in nature and may cover a wide spectrum of daily life issues such as depression, anxiety, addiction, post- traumatic stress and many others.
You will meet with me, your therapist, in a confidential setting where we will have a series of conversations which, over time, will help you work with, identify, prioritize and achieve your goals.
During the course of your therapy we will help you to cope better with the problems of your life and realising your potential.
There is a lot of overlap between these terms and they are often used interchangeably. The term psychotherapy is commonly substituted for psychological therapy. The process of individual psychotherapy, psychological therapy, therapy and/or counselling is commonly referred to as the “psychotherapeutic relationship”. This unique relationship allows you to reassess yourself in your environment and arrive at a path to a better life. The process creates a secure environment based upon trust and “openness” which allows you to explore and revise your feelings, values and above all, your goals for yourself. You will seek out the best path to your psychological and physical health, reward and happiness.
Psychotherapy can be useful for many interpersonal and intrapersonal problems. It is a personal process of deeply listening to, learning from, and working with the protective or wounded parts of oneself. Becoming aware of and caring for oneself helps a person to heal, change, and grow.
My approach to therapy is holistic, integrative, humanistic, client-centred and existentialist.
This means that you and I will address your unique situation, needs and goals, which you bring to therapy. I will listen very carefully and attentively to your presenting problem and together with you, we will plan a course of therapy that is most suitable for your situation and your needs. This may include addressing where appropriate, your feelings, thoughts, behaviours, interpersonal, occupational, existential (where you find meaning in life) and spiritual functioning, as well as physical health.
There are many different types of therapies in the literature and my approach integrates many of these in a way that will help you to address your concerns. Whilst there are many forms of therapy some of the more common forms of therapy include cognitive-behavioural, rational-emotive, cognitive, behaviour, psychodynamic, systemic, interpersonal, mindfulness and Gestalt therapy.
In addition as you may know from reading my page on hypnosis, I am able to incorporate hypnosis an adjunctive treatment into your treatment, when and if it is appropriate. As a qualified experienced therapist I integrate appropriate therapies into your process in a seamless manner whilst simultaneously ensuring that we are first and foremost attending to your deepest needs. My approach to your therapy is that I never impose treatments on any client, but rather listen carefully and then integrate a meaningful and useful treatment plan for your therapy.
The length of your therapy may be short-term or long-term and will depend on the nature and severity of your problem and goals. Often people initially attend a short or medium course of therapy and then opt to continue addressing their goals on a less frequent basis. As a contrast, some people attend a shorter course of treatment and then return years later to address further concerns.
Other people prefer to address their goals over a longer term of therapy due to the fact that they present with more complex issues. Yet again, other people prefer to individualize their therapeutic process according to what they require to address their goals.
Psychotherapy is a common and useful means of self-growth and self-actualization. Therapy can help people to resolve barriers which interfere with positive qualities, such as joy, compassion, peace, self-esteem, spiritual connection, and love. Many people enjoy therapy and appreciate the journey of becoming more conscious about themselves, their inner world, and their relationships.
